A Word From Vic Greetings Hawkeye Members: One of the things that we all fail to practice at one time or another is GUN SAFETY. It is easy to forget to open the bolt on your rifle while in the meeting room during the Bench Rest League or to open the slide or cylinder of your handgun when you have it laying in your case during the Bowling Pin League. We have all also "tried out the trigger" or "checked out a red dot sight" while pointing the gun in a "less than perfectly safe" direction. Sometimes after a particularly bad round in Combat League we have even turned around, in disgust, with a round still in the chamber.
Safe shooting practices are something we all need to be conscious of at all times and work very hard to follow. Most are common sense and easy to do but they are also easy to forget sometimes. Our club has been very lucky so far and, other than a couple minor incidences, we have had no problems and I am very proud, and thankful, of our record.
Another safety area we sometimes forget is eye and ear protection. Ear protection is usually remembered as soon as the first shot is fired but eye protection can easily be overlooked. Both are important and should be worn at all times while shooting or while on the firing line while others shoot. They are both also required per club rules.
We all need to be vigilant and if we see something unsafe we need to point it out. This is not being critical so don't be offended if someone asks you to open the bolt on your rifle or reminds you that you don't have your safety glasses on. Whether you are a new member or have been around a few years we all need to look out for one another and keep our shoots as safe as possible.
So, let's shoot safely and have fun.
Best regards,
Vic
